SUSTAINABLE WEDDING ATTIRE | FOR BRIDES, THE GROOMS, and THE GUESTS

So what is sustainable wedding attire?

Well… I guess let’s take a look at “fashion” and then we can apply that to sustainable wedding attire. Sustainable fashion refers to sustainability throughout the entire process/life of textiles and clothing. The idea is to create clothing that is environmentally friendly, socially responsible, and economically viable.

Eco fashion and clothing can be broken down into 4 parts: materials used, the production, supply chains, and consumption of these items.

1. Materials – sustainable clothing tends to be made of natural organic materials found in nature such as wool, linen, and cotton. These materials are biodegradable. Natural dyes are used instead of any toxic chemicals.

2. The Production Process – eco fashion should always support social and environmental responsibility by using renewable energy sources, minimizing waste, and reducing overall consumption.

3. Supply Chains – sustainable fashion must know that their supply chains are ethical, safe, and that all workers have support, humane working conditions, and are paid fair wages. Eco clothing companies are also responsible for reducing their supply chains to as few as possible, which in turn lowers the carbon footprint of each textile.

4. Consumption – there is another element of social responsibility that falls back to the companies and that is to promote consumption reduction through marketing, branding, company culture and policies, but more importantly through creating durable, long-lasting clothing.

Some ideas for SUSTAINABLE WEDDING ATTIRE

For the brides and the femmes

Thankfully, many designers and brands have started to prioritize sustainability in their production practices offering eco-friendly and ethically made bridal attire. Additionally, we have seen an uptick in creativity (thanks is large part to social media) so crafting, upcycling, creating and also influenced couples.  Below are some things that we have seen and loved!

Second hand or thrIfted wedding dresses

Wearing a vintage or pre-loved wedding dress is a sustainable and adorable option. Many vintage dresses are one-of-a-kind and have unique details that add character to your wedding look.

The couple in this photo bought their wedding attire from a bridal store that only sells second hand wedding attire. The women is wearing a beautiful sleeveless white dress and the man is wearing a dark brown suit.

local, Eco-friendly and ethically made dresses

Choosing dresses made from eco-friendly such as organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, or tercel, which are renewable and biogradeable. By supporting local, your dress has a lower environmental impact.

The couple in the photo eloped at the beginning of Covid. They live in Denver, eloped at their house, and took photos at the park right near their house. During their elopement, the Colorado fires were blazing so while the photos appear to be taken during sunset, these were taken in the early afternoon. The sky was bright orange. These two wanted to support Colorado owned businesses for every part of their elopement day and choose to purchase their wedding attire from local companies.

The anti-white dress movement

LBD, a suit, a dinosaur costume… umm it’s all amazing and it’s soooo much easier to find eco-brands that create all the things! And guess what… it’s wayyyy less expensive! It’s your day so dress how you want.

This bride and groom decided to elope at their favorite museum in Denver, the Clyfford Stills Museum. Rudy wore one of the suits he already owned and his beautiful bride wore a long sleeve magneta dress, which she already owned and is one of her favorite dresses.

The handmade or up-cycled dress

I LOVE LOVE when brides repurpose their mom’s or a loved one’s wedding dress and make their your own. It is a sustainable option and a very meaningful option. You can continue to pass it on… #sisterhoodofthetravelingdress ?

This bride wanted to take her elopement day back to her roots and incorporate her heritage into her day. This couple chose to elope on Dia de los Muertos and wore traditional attire for the day. The bride's outfit was handmade by a local designer. It is a two piece outfit, the top is a strapless black bando. The bottom is a long black skirt with a red and green floral print. The groom is wearing all black. Both have traditional sugar skull Dia de los Muertos makeup.
